“Superball” – FIFA World Cup 1950 Brazil retro soccer ball Overview
The first World Cup after the World War II was organized in Brazil in 1950. From the point of view of the ball, this edition represents a historical evolution: balls had no more laces and slot anymore, and the bladder was sewn inside the ball during making, and no more extracted for inflating. A small hole on a panel permitted the introduction of a pin directly into a special valve of the bladder: air was pumped in and automatic retained. The old appendix on the bladder was replaced by this valve, introduced in 1935 but spread worldwide only after the War World II. The balls appeared more spherical and it was much faster and easier to prepare them for the games. In the Brazilian World Cup the used official ball was called Duplo T and was manufactured by the Brazilian Superball. Although the name Duplo T was not a T-panel model, but a 12 panel one, similar to the Argentinean Tiento from 1930, with sinuous shape panel very nice interlocked. The balls of the 1950 World Cup were hand sewn, leather made, brown coloured, and they had a small logo of the manufacturer on a panel, which contrasted with the rule of FIFA which recommended only anonymous balls (without logos). One of the matchballs used in this world cup (between the USA and England 1:0) is displayed in the “Soccer Hall of Fame” in Oneonta, NY in the USA. I visited this museum in 2007, see the attached pictures.
